  17. <p>     Etiquette: the word evokes images of crinolines, cotillions
  18. and debutante balls. But at Chicago's DePaul University, good
  19. manners are essential weapons in the arsenal of the young job
  20. hunter. For four years now, undergraduate training has included a
  21. formal "etiquette dinner," where $25 buys graduating seniors a
  22. multicourse meal at a ferociously fancy hotel--and a crash
  23. course in social grace from experts in the art of power
  24. schmoozing.

  26. <p>     Advice runs from the obvious ("Avoid statements like `The
  27. food looks pathetic,'" urges a guidebook) to the arcane (a
  28. third of the predinner cocktail hour is devoted to group
  29. instruction in the body language of handshaking and other
  30. niceties). The three-hour banquet is awesomely all inclusive:
  31. "Soup, salad, what do you do with this fork, coffee, napkins,
  32. excusing yourself, dessert, any final questions and then we
  33. break it up," says Jane McGrath, DePaul's career-planning and
  34. placement director. Thus, as DePaul students enter the
  35. backstabbing world of business, at least they will know on which
  36. side of the plate they can find the knife.
